Outlaws Come up Just Short in Quest for "Weekend Warrior" Title
Posted: Thursday, February 29, 2012
Playing for the second week in a row, at All World Sports' "Weekend Warriors" Tournament in Woodland on February 25-26, the Outlaws come up just short in a Semi-Final game, losing to the Sutter Storm 8-7 in a game they trailed 6-0 after 3 innings. While they showed great heart to make it a one run game, and were in reality a great drop-step and catch by the Storm's center fielder away from tying it in the final inning, the slow, sloppy start was too much for them to overcome in the end.

February 26-26, All World "Weekend Warriors" - Woodland

Game #4 vs. Sutter Storm
Game #3 vs. Woodland Assassins

Game #2 vs. Tribe
Game #1 vs. NorCal Thunder

Game #4 vs. Sutter Storm
Facing a Sutter Storm team that we've faced several times in what's usually a tight contest, with a berth in the championship game at stake, a sloppy start by the Outlaws proves to be too much to overcome this time. The Outlaws ultimately dropping the contest 8-7 after trailing 6-0 after 3 innings. The Outlaws stranded two in scoring position, both reaching via walk, in the top half, and the Storm scored one in the bottom half with two walks and a single coming after Josh struck out the first two. The boys go quietly in the top of the 2nd and again the Storm pushes across a single run on a single, twp passed balls, and an RBI ground out. After another quiet inning in T3, the Storm seemingly blow it open in the bottom half, scoring 4 runs on 2 singles, a walk, a triple, and an error. The score after three, 6-0 Storm. The Outlaws refuse to quit however, and make a game of it in the 4th, turning 3 succesive walks, a hit batter, a dropped 3rd strike, and a single by Greysen inot 4 runs to make a game of it after all. The Storm pushed across another single run in the bottom of the 4th to make it 7-4 Storm. The teams traded runs in the 5th, Josh singling and coming in to score on Bailey's sac fly, and the Storm turning a lead-off triple into a run. Showing great fortitude, the Outlaws, down to their last at bat, made things real interesting in the top of the 6th. Coop led off with with a single and one batter later, Trev hit a bullet towards the left fielder. Playing the hop tentatively, the ball shot over his head, and both he and Coop came around to score, making the socre 807 Storm. The next batter, Jack-O, got what he was looking for on a 1-1 pitch and crushed one deep to center field. While this writer can't speak for everyone, off the bat, I was sure the only question left was if it was going to be a triple or inside the park home run... Alas, the ensuing celebration wasn't meant to be as the Storm's center fielder, who was playing fairly deep to begin with, got a ridiculous jump on the ball, changed direction after his drop step and made a fantastic catch of a ball that for all intents and purposes seemed destined to end up against the center field fence. Josh lined out to the 2B to end the game. While the team showed a great amount of fight, it wasn't quite enough. The Outlaws collected only 4 hits, (Coop, Greysen, Trevor, and Josh), but did collect 8 walks with Jordan drawing two himself. Cooper and Chris each scored twice, Greysen and Bailey had sacrifices, and Heringer had the lone stolen base.

Game #3 vs. Woodland Assassins
For a quick moment, it looked like some sloppy 8am game play would cost the Outlaws yet again, but in the end, a little fortitude and response to adversity provide the wake-up call needed for this must win contest. Things started out funky from the get go, when the Assassins lead-off hitter hit a triple into RCF gap, and trouble with the exchange on the relay turned it into a 1-0 defecit one batter into the game. After a popup to short recorded the first out, the next batter singled and went to second on an errant throw. A stolen base, and another errant throw created another run for Woodland. Thankfully, after a 2nd out on a grounder to SS, a single to center and a steal of second base, the inning ended when starting pitcher Coop wheeled around and threw to Greyson at second for the inning ending pick-off. After a half inning, the score was 2-0 Assassins, and quite frankly, the inning "felt" much worse than a two run inning. Once again the Outlaws responded to that mess exactly like you'd hope they would, turning Coop's lead-off walk, G's triple into RCF, Trevor's walk, and a Sac Fly by Doc Soap (Josh) into a 3-run bottom of the first. After the boys restored some order in the T2nd with a 1-2-3 inning that again ended on a pickoff at second from Coop to Grey, they came back in bottom half of two and took command of this contest. Bailey coaxed a leadoff walk on another great, 6 pitch at bat, which was followed by two errors in the infield, an RBI single (Coop), a walk (G), a two-run double (Trev), and, for the second inning in a row a quality at-bat to drive in a run with a ground out by Jack, to make the score 8-2 Outlaws after 2. Coop allowed a single in top of 3rd, but wiggled out without any further damage, striking out the #3 hitter with a runner on 3rd to end the threat. In the bottom half, two walks and and a nice 2-out/2-strike RBI single by Little La (Chance) added a final insurance run to the Outlaws tally, making it 9-3 ater 3. Bailey came in to finish up, and while he did struggle a little, giving up 4 hits, 2 walks, and 3 runs in his two inning stint, we was able to close it out with the help of Trevor thow threw out a runner trying to steal 2nd to end the game at 9-6 Outlaws. Final pitching totals: Coop: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BBs, and 3 Ks (60 pitches) and Bailey: 2IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BBs, and 2 Ks (35 pitches). Offensively, the team again only tallied 4 hits (Coopy, Grey, Trev, and Chance, but coupled with 6 BBs and 3 errors by Woodland it was enough. Despite 6 Outlaws errors, they move on to face the Sutter Storm in the semis, hoping for a berth in the championship game.

Game #2 vs.Tribe
Coming right back to play immediately after the heartbreak of game one, the Outlaws did exactly what they needed to do, thoroughly dominating an overmatched Tribe team by the score of 15-0 in three innings. Over the three innings, Coop (2 innings) and Chance (1), didn't allow a hit and faced only two over the minimum. Each struck out one. Offensively, the Outlaws scored early and often, only the 15 runs after 3 innings rule saving us from what was sure to be a fight at the bat rack if it had gone any further. Coming out swinging and aided by 4 Tribe errors, the Outlaws scored 3 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd, and 9 in the 3rd to end it early. There were several kids with two hits (Coop, Greysen, Jordan, and Chance) multiple runs scored (Coop 3, JJ, Bing, and Chris 2each), and multiple RBIs (Grey 3, Jonny 2, Chance 2), but Heringer stood out in this one, going 3 for 3, with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Now its time for some scoreboard watching, and we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Game #1 vs. Nor Cal Thunder
With Greysen taking the hill for his first start since returning to Outlaws (and perhaps first Outlaws start ever?) the Outlaws looked to start the day off on a positive note. After surrendering one run via two walks in the top half, the Outlaws come back and score their own run on, you guessed it, two walks (Coop/Jack), with Coop coming home on a balk during Ripper's at bat. After the Thunder led of the 2nd with a bunt single, that runner was erased on a nice throw down by Bulaga (Jordan) for a caught stealing. Greysen then proceeded to retire the next five batters he faced. After stranding 2 to end the bottom of the 2nd, the Outlaws push one across on another lead off walk by Coop and a ground-rule double by G in the 3rd. G struck out two in the top of the 4th, but the Thunder were able to scratch out a run on two singles to tie the score at 2. The Outlaws magic formula for the game failed them in the the 5th as two walks in the inning failed to produce a run, but after G-Money hel them scoreless in the 5th, the boys pushed one across in the bottom half on a lead-off infield single by Coop and a triple into the RCF gap by Trevor. The 6th inning was quiet on both ends, then things got interesting in the 7th. After a misplay of a fly ball made it a runner at third, nobody out, Greysen struck out the next two. Unfortunately, during the second one, a passed ball allowed the runner to score, tying it at 3-3. So the Outlaws go into bottom half knowing a tie is th worst they'll do but hoping for a single run to get the win. After a great 8 pitch at bat by Chance results in a lead-off walk, he gets thrown out trying to steal second for the first out. A couple pitches later, Bailey reaches first on a HBP, but ends up getting picked off for the second out. A ground out to third ends the game, the Outlaws very unsatisfied by the 3-3 result. Greysen certainly pitched more than well enough to win: 7 inning CG, 6 hits, 3 BBs, and 6 Ks on 103 pitches. Offensively, the Outlaws only collect 4 hits (Coop, Grey, Trev, Jordan), but did collect 7 BBs. Individually, in addition to Greysen's 2B/ 1 RBI, and Trev's 3B, Cooper scored twice and had two SB, and Bailey also had 2 SBs reaching base all three trips to the plate. On the negative side, there were 7 strikeouts, 4 of the dreaded "looking" variety, something we've really got to clean up as a team as it has bitten us repeatedly over the first part of the season.

"New Look" Outlaws take on Presidents Day Super NIT at BLD
Posted: Thursday, February 23, 2012
The "New Look" Outlaws took a bit of a leap of faith by making NCTB's President's Day Super NIT at BLD their first tournament of the season. Coming off limited practice time (outdoors at least), and only one scrimmage the previous week, the Outlaws, while definitely showing a little rust, play pretty well overall, winning 2 and losing 2 over the President's Day weekend. Given the level of competition in this tournament, the staff was generally pleased with the results, while admittedly wondering what might have been with a warm-up tournament or couple more scrimmages under their belts

Game #4 vs. East Bay Lookouts
Having lost the morning game to finish 3rd in their pool, the Outlaws were forced to come back for a late afternoon game against the Lookouts who also finished third in their pool. Sending Baily (Bingham) out to start the game, the Outlaws were hoping to finish on a positive note. Bailey started strong, retiring 3 in a row after allowing a leadoff single up the middle. The Outlaws used two walks and an RBI single by Trevor to take a 2-0 lead after one inning. While Bailey took the Lookouts down 1-2-3 in the 2nd and 3rd (3 Ks), the Outlaws scored 2 more in the 2nd and 2 more in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead. In the 2nd, after the first two were retired, the Outlaws scored twice after two outs, the rally starting when Jordan reached on an error by the 2B. Cooper followed with triple down the right field line and Joe drove him in with yet another RBI single. In the third, after Trev led off with a LONG opposite field ground rule double, another run scored without the benefit of another hit but aided by two walks. The Lookouts did mount a rally in the top of the 4th, when a single, walk and double made it 6-2 with a runner on 3rd and no outs. after striking out the next batter, the defense stepped up to squash any thoughts of a big comeback. The next hitter hit the first pitch fairly deep to left for what looked to be an easy Sac Fly, but neophyte Outlaw LF Chris Clegg had other ideas. Showing perfect form, Chris got behind the ball, caught it with momentum, and released it immediately, throwing a strike to his cutoff man. The throw was so strong and accurate that the catcher, Jordan, was calling to let it come through to the plate. Bailey did cut it of though, and his relay to plate was just in time to complete the 7-1-2 double play to end the inning. One of those plays where everything has to be perfect to get the out: Everything was, and we did. The Outlaws pretty much put this one away in the bottom half, scoring 3 more times on 3 singles (Joe, Trevor, Greysen) and 2 walks. The Outlaws had 2 hits in 5th (Coop and Joe), but didn't score, and added one more in the 6th when Bailey scored after singles by Gresysen and Josh (RBI). On the other side, Bailey finished up a ridiculously solid 5 inning stint by retiring his last three batters after the first two batters reached to start the inning. His final line: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, and 6 Ks. After all of his hard work in the off-season, a real eye opening performance for "BayDog", something that can really help the Outlaws as we move forward. Chris came in to pitch the 6th, struggled, and was replaced by Josh, who put out the fire, retiring all three he faced including 2 strike outs. Final score: Outlaws win 10-5. Hitting Standouts: Joe Chalco 3-3, 2 R, and an RBI. Trevor Zscheile 3-4, Double, 3 R, and 2 RBIs. Greysen Pulsipher 2-4 with an RBI, and Cooper Renteria 2-3 with a 3B, run scored and an RBI. Also, Bailey had 2 BBs, 2 R, 2 RBI, and 2 SB.

Game #3 vs. Nor Cal Sluggers
In a game where the final score didn't really reflect what was mostly a tightly contested game, the Nor Cal Sluggers beat the outlaws 7-0. Knowing the winner of this game would advance to bracket play on Monday, the Outlaws were again unable to come up with the big hit to potentially swing the tide. Again, the Sluggers came out true to their name, using a leadoff double to take a 1-0 lead in the top half of the 1st. They actually banged out 3 more singles after that, but had to settle for the one run when, with the bases loaded, Jack fielded a hot smash to his left, stepped on 3rd for the force and threw across the diamond to complete the inning ending double play. The boys got a baserunner in the second when Coop walked, but he was stranded at third to end the inning. The next three innings turned into a pitchers duel with Joe going 1-2-3 in the 2nd and third, and facing only 2 batters over the minimum over that three inning stretch. Unfortunately, the Sluggers' big lefty was up to the task, throwing a complete game shutout, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 10 (including striking out the side in the 3rd) on 122 pitches. The Outlaws did threaten with a 2 out rally in the second and had a second, potentially game changing rally snuffed out by what this "hot headed?" reporter thought was a horribly blown call at the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing only 3-0 at the time, Joe led off with a single and was at 3B with one out and the heart of the order coming up. When Trev hit a comebacker, Joe broke for the plate and got around the catcher avoiding the tag with a textbook slide. As always seems to be the case at BLD, this "questionable" call came at a most critical time in the game. Instead of a 3-1 game with one out and Trev at first, it was still 3-0, two outs, and Trev at third. While its hard to say it would have made a difference given the dearth of timely hitting throughout the weekend, it sure would have been nice to see how things might have shaken out. Ultimately, it wasn't meant to be as the Sluggers, having tacked on single runs in the 5th and 5th to make it 3-0, added four in the 7th to take what little suspense there was out of it. The Sluggers outhit the Outlaws 13-4, but again, with 4 of those hits in first, and 5 in the last inning, it was a very tightly fought game in the middle innings before things got ugly at the end. Overall, not a great performance, but one were you have to tip your hat to the big lefty who was pretty much in command the whole way.

Game #2 vs.Slammers
Coming back for a game they had to have in order to have a shot at making it to Monday, the Outlaws seemed to find the groove that seemed so elusive in the morning game. After Joe walked to lead-off the game, and Coop bunted him over to 2nd, he score on Trev's single to CF. "Trev Run" then proceeded to steal 2nd, 3rd, and home (on a double steal in 1st and 3rd scenario) to spot the good guys with a 2-0 lead after the top half. Josh, who was a game-time decision to start with a pinched nerve in his neck, gave up one unearned run in the first inning, but that was the last run the Slammers would score. Josh ended up his three innings with 3 hits allowed, 3 BBs, and 3 Ks. Coop allowed on hit and struck out two in one inning of relief, and Bingham foreshadowed his performance on Sunday with an 8 pitch 1-2-3 inning to close it out. Back on the offensive side, after going down in order in the 2nd, the Outlaws scored a single run in 3rd on a single by Jordan, and courtesy runner Chris (Clegg) eventually scoring on a wild pitch. The boys then blew this one wide open in the 4th, sending 12 men to the plate. Collecting 4 hits, and aided by 4 walks (including 2 w/bases loaded), the Outlaws scored 6 runs in the frame to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Two more walks and a double by Chris led to two more runs and a final score of 11-1 Outlaws. Offensively, the Outlaws ended up with 7 hits (Trev: 2 for 2, with a 2B) and added 8 BBs (Jarren: 2) and 6 SBs (Trev: 3). Oddly enough, the Slammers committed no errors while the Outlaws had 3 of their own.

Game #1 vs. Concord Patriots
Unfortunately, the Outlaws came out of the gate slowly, and never recovered, dropping the opener 7-2. Looking a little sloppy, and quite frankly, a little low in the energy department early, a couple of 3 run innings early by this revamped Patriots team seemed to end this one before it ever got started. After Cooper walked and stole second to lead off the inning, he died there as the next three batters were retired. In the bottom half, the Patriots came out swinging; the leadoff hitter led off with a triple to deep right-center and two more hits let to a 3-0 defecit after one inning. The Outlaws loaded the bases right away with singles from Jarren (Meek) and Joe (Chalco) and a walk. Chance (La Chapelle) came through with a big hit into right field with a full count, driving in Jarren for the Outlaws first run of the season. Unfortunately, Joe, who had a great jump from second and never broke stride coming around third was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw from the right fielder. The score after 1 and a half: 3-1 Concord. The Patriots struck again in the 2nd, scoring three more runs on four singles and a walk. Greysen came in to relieve Jonny (Loza), who struggled with command and seemed to be up in the zone throughout his abbreviated outing, Greysen threw the ball well considering he hadn't taken the mound in quite some time, keeping the Patriots scoreless in the 3rd and 4th innings. They did get to him again later in the game though, as they used many great at bats to coax 3 full-count walks to add to a base hit and an error, tallying 3 more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Overall, Greysen gave a workmanlike effort, throwing 88 pitches in his 3 1/3 innings to help the team avoid burning more pitchers in game one. Offensively, the Outlaws only scored once more, a lone run in the 4th. That run coming on a leadoff single by Jack, another single by Joe and a sac fly from Jonny on a great at bat, smoking a ball into right field w/two strikes, but right at the RF. In the end, the Outlaws were only out hit 8-6 (Joe 2 for 2), but the 8 walks issued and some shaky defense were the difference.
